Limerick 37- A new start for Limerick Soccer

A new beginning for the future of soccer in Limerick has been marked with the formal launch today of Limerick 37, the new senior soccer club in Limerick for the Eircom League of Ireland First Division.

Limerick 37 has taken its name from the year 1937, when Limerick Soccer first established its long and proud tradition of playing the game in the region.

This new Sporting initiative comes following the decision by the Football Association of Ireland to award a new licence to the Limerick 37 group.

The group is headed by CEO Ger Finnin, along with his management team which includes Paul McGee, Manager of Limerick 37, a former League of Ireland player with Sligo Rovers and Galway United, and also a former Irish International with sixteen caps to his name, as well as Commercial Manager Paul 0' Riordan, and recent addition Nicky Woulfe of Woulfe Event Management to handle media and public relations for the new club.

The group is assisted by a strong back up staff including kit manager, players, club promotion officers as well as a number of key volunteers.

CEO of Limerick 37 Ger Finnin has paid tribute to the vision of the local clubs which have made the new initiative possible.

"Local soccer at all levels is the driving force for the future of Limerick Senior Soccer. That is why Soccer Limerick has a forty percent stake in the running of the new club, and will play a pivotal role in the important decisions that affect the clubs future."

Manager Paul Mc Gee has been very impressed with the seventeen playing members of the panel, particularly after their win against Bray last Friday night in Jackman Park.
"1' m looking forward to building on that, and having one successful soccer community in the Limerick region," he said.

Notwithstanding the huge successes which Limerick soccer had in the early 70's and 80's, there have been a number of false dawns in relation to the development of senior soccer here in the past.

Limerick 37 plan aims to have a realistic approach to the development of the game in the Limerick region, supported at all levels by soccer clubs in the city and county. ,

Limerick 37's first home league game takes place at Jackman Park on Friday 16 March against Athlone Town at 7.30pm.
The management and the players are hoping that the sporting Limerick public will get behind them to establish Limerick 37 as a serious force in the Eircom League of Ireland first division, and as a force to be reckoned with in the wider soccer community in the future.
