Sport - Its role In Social Inclusion Seminar Punches Hotel Limerick April 27 2007
The author of the recent Regeneration report for Limerick today urged communities to press ahead and seek better sports amenities for their areas, as part of a package of measures to improve the quality of family's lives across a number of communities in the city.
John Fitzgerald was speaking at a seminar in the city aimed at exloring the numerous ways in which sport in all its forms and at all levels, can enrich and turn peoples lives around for the better.
In his recent hard hitting report on Regeneration in some of the poorer parishes in the city, he stressed the importance of providing activities and amenities including sport during and after school time and during the summer.
The seminar was also addressed by the Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea who said the Govenment had fully endorsed the report and its recommendations which are necessary for starting to build up these communities again and giving thema new start. He backed Mr Fitzgeralds assertion that sport at all levels can help strengthen communities, build better networks and better futures.
Ger Finnin, the CEO of Limerick 37 who are behind the organisation of the seminar spoke of their plans to get their players involved in working with local communities to create new local heroes ina rapidly changing Limerick.
Eoghan Prendergast of Shannon Development, which supported the seminar, said that Limerick is unique in that its sports fans were hugely supportive of all sports. In addition the sport facilities at the Arena at the University of Limerick enjoyed a worldwide reputation for quality, which greatly enhanced Limericks strong sporting tradition.
The FAI has backed the seminar and their technical director Packie Bonner plans to announce details of their "Red Card Against Racism" programme at the seminar.
The speakers at the seminar included Minister forDefence Wilie )'Dea, John Fitzgerald Author of the Regenaration Report for Lmerick, Packie Bonner of the FAI, Elaine O'Connor Limerick Sports Partnership, and Ger Finnin, CEO Limerick 37.
